In the wake of his electoral triumph, Democratic New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is appealing to his supporters for additional financial contributions.
Despite his victory, Mamdani is not resting on his laurels. Instead, he is actively seeking to raise a substantial $4 million to cover the costs associated with staffing, processing the 50,000 resumes he has received, and implementing his socialist agenda. In a video posted to X, Mamdani emphasized his campaign's reliance on the average working American rather than affluent donors.
"But why are we fundraising? Well, we have less than 50 days until we take office and we have a lot to do," Mamdani explained.
"We have to vet the 50,000 resumes weve received. We have to keep paying our incredible team. And we have to plan not just our inauguration, but our policy implementation. Now unlike the campaign, transitions do not get public matching funds from the city. So that 8 to 1 match? Gone. Its up to us to raise the money."
According to Conservative Daily News, Mamdani's transition team has already amassed over $1 million in just two weeks, a testament to his grassroots support. He proudly noted that his average donation stands at approximately $77, with over 12,000 individuals contributing thus far. This figure starkly contrasts with the previous administration's transition, led by Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who averaged $1,219 per donor.
Despite this achievement, Mamdani continues to solicit support, aiming to reach the $4 million target to ensure a seamless start on January 1.
"Weve raised more than $1 million in just two weeks," Mamdani stated. "Our average donation is around $77 and more than 12,000 of you have donated so far, which is much lower than the last administrations transition. But were still asking for your help because we need to raise $4 million in total so January 1 can be the day we start to deliver, not start to prepare. I hope very soon not to have to ask you for money, but until then, Im asking."
Mamdani's fundraising efforts began immediately after his electoral victory on November 4. He urged his supporters to resume their financial contributions, emphasizing the necessity of building a robust infrastructure to support his transition. "Remember how I told you a few months ago to stop sending us money? You can start again," Mamdani remarked.
"This transition requires staff, research, and an infrastructure that can meet this moment. And it will be made possible by the people who built and believe in this movement. So I hope youll make a donation at transition2025.com."
Running on a socialist platform, Mamdani has pledged to implement policies such as freezing rent, increasing the minimum wage to $30 an hour, and establishing government-run grocery stores and buses. Additionally, he plans to raise taxes on wealthy individuals and corporations and create an agency where social workers, rather than police, respond to non-violent 911 calls.
His vision aligns with the broader goals of socialism, as he articulated in a 2021 video from a Young Democratic Socialists of America conference, where he stated that the ultimate aim is "seizing the means of production."
Mamdani's campaign has garnered endorsements from prominent figures such as Independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, underscoring his alignment with progressive ideals. As he prepares to assume office, Mamdani's commitment to his platform remains steadfast, with fundraising efforts continuing to play a crucial role in his transition strategy.
