CNN political commentator Scott Jennings recently addressed the ongoing speculation surrounding President Donald Trump's potential pursuit of a third term, suggesting that such discussions are merely part of a familiar pattern.
Jennings argued that Democrats are once again falling into a trap set by the President, who has a history of provoking his political adversaries.
As reported by the Daily Caller, the speculation intensified when President Trump shared a meme on Truth Social featuring a mock campaign sign with the phrase "Trump 4eva." During a panel discussion on "The Arena," Jennings dismissed the notion that Trump is seriously considering circumventing the Constitution's two-term limit.
He described this as a continuation of Trump's strategy to "troll" his opponents. "I think hes trolling the Democrats, which he loves to do. And they fall for it every time. Theyve been doing it for 10 years on a number of issues," Jennings remarked to Kasie Hunt. He further elaborated on the gimmicky nature of the idea, mentioning the hypothetical scenarios of Trump being elected vice president or even speaker of the House.
Jennings emphasized that the talk of Trump seeking a third term is nothing more than political theater. "These are all gimmicks. He said it would be too cute by half. And hes right. Hes not going to need a third term. Hes had two very successful terms, Im sure, by the end of 2028. But I think this is a troll. I think people are unnecessarily falling for it," Jennings stated.
He also noted the commercial success of the speculation, suggesting that merchandise sales are likely benefiting from the buzz.
The 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951, clearly prohibits any president from serving more than two terms. Despite this constitutional limitation, some legal experts, such as law professor and ABC News contributor Kim Wehle, have speculated about potential future challenges to this restriction.
Wehle pointed to the Supreme Court's decision to keep Trump on the ballot in states like Colorado, Maine, and Illinois as a possible avenue for such challenges.
In an interview with NBC's Kristen Welker, President Trump dismissed the idea of seeking a third term, stating that while many have encouraged him to run again, his focus remains on the current administration. This stance underscores the notion that the third-term speculation is more about political maneuvering than any genuine intention to defy constitutional boundaries.
