In a recent interview with Newsmax, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy made a bold assertion that the ongoing government shutdown is a deliberate attempt by Democrats to inflict hardship on the American populace.
Speaking on "Rob Schmitt Tonight," Duffy expressed President Donald Trump's dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs, stating, "Donald Trump actually cares about the American people and the impact this has on the American people."
According to Newsmax, Duffy attributed the current predicament to the Democrats' desire to liberalize immigration policies. He claimed, "We are in this situation because Democrats wanted to open up the border." He further accused House Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., of advocating for open borders, leading to an influx of "10, 15, 18 million people" into the country.
Duffy also criticized the Democrats' intent to provide healthcare benefits to these immigrants. He expressed the frustration of air traffic controllers, who are currently working without pay due to the shutdown. He blamed Schumer for failing to secure the necessary votes to pass the continuing resolution and end the shutdown. Duffy stated, "Because our staffing is so tight, if a few of them don't show up, we have major issues in the airspace, and they're angry at him."
The Transportation Secretary suggested that Schumer could resolve the issue by encouraging his party to pass a clean continuing resolution. He also pointed out that the funding for the Affordable Care Act is secure until the end of the year, yet Democrats are choosing to shut down the government now. Duffy stated, "Republicans have said let's extend government funding to the end of November. There's plenty of time to negotiate and have this conversation, but they want to shut it down right now."
Duffy argued that the Democrats' actions are not driven by concern for Obamacare subsidies, but rather for the illegal immigrants who can't access these subsidies. He stated, "They care about illegals who now can't get the subsidy that's what they're mad about. And that's why they're shutting it down right now."
In a direct challenge to the Democrats, Duffy questioned their commitment to the American people, asking, "Who are you fighting for? Why don't you fight for the American people, your constituents? Why are you fighting for the people who came across the border under [former President] Joe Biden?"
