Shock Poll: Kathy Hochul Barely Hanging On Against Elise Stefanik In Tight Race

Written by Published

In a recent development, New York Governor Kathy Hochul finds herself in a precarious position as she faces a potential challenge from Representative Elise Stefanik.

A statewide poll conducted by GrayHouse reveals that Hochul's lead over Stefanik is tenuous, with the governor holding a slim 5-point advantage, 48 percent to 43 percent. However, the dynamics shift when voters are informed about the candidates' backgrounds, including Hochul's endorsement of socialist New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani.

Under these circumstances, Stefanik edges ahead, capturing 46.4 percent compared to Hochul's 45.9 percent.

According to The Washington Free Beacon, the poll indicates that Hochul's prospects for reelection could be further compromised if Mamdani secures the mayoral position. A significant 38 percent of voters, including 47 percent of independents, expressed a decreased likelihood of supporting a Democrat in such a scenario.

The governor's approval ratings are also concerning, with only 39 percent of New Yorkers expressing approval of her performance, while a substantial 56 percent disapprove. In contrast, Stefanik enjoys a net positive approval rating, and a notable 59 percent of respondents believe it is time for a new governor.

Landon Wall, a pollster at GrayHouse, commented on Hochul's predicament, describing her as being in a "deeply vulnerable position." He noted that her "coalition is historically fragile" and there is a "significant growing appetite for change." This sentiment is echoed by Stefanik, who is anticipated to announce her candidacy following the November midterm elections.

She is preparing for a potential face-off with Hochul, asserting in a statement, "The data is clear. Kathy Hochul, the Worst Governor in America, is a deeply embattled and historically unpopular failed Governor who is struggling to even gain support from her own party."

Hochul's recent endorsement of Mamdani has drawn attention, with the governor expressing her belief that the socialist candidate possesses the "courage, urgency and optimism New York City needs to lead it through the challenges of this moment." This endorsement, however, may have contributed to the erosion of her support base, as indicated by the poll results.

As the political landscape in New York continues to evolve, the potential matchup between Hochul and Stefanik promises to be a closely watched contest, with significant implications for the state's future leadership.
