In a tragic incident that has left a community in mourning, a suspect has been apprehended following a deadly shooting at a waterfront restaurant in North Carolina.
The attack, which occurred on Saturday night, resulted in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to at least five others. The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Nigel Max Edge, now faces multiple charges, including three counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted first-degree murder.
According to Fox News, the shooting took place at the American Fish Company restaurant in Southport. ChyAnn Ketchum, the city's public information officer, confirmed the charges against Edge. Southport Police Chief Todd Coring addressed the media, describing the attack as "highly premeditated" and asserting that the suspect acted alone.
"We believe that this was a targeted location," Coring stated, reassuring the public that the suspect is in custody and that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
The incident unfolded when a lone individual aboard a boat on the Cape Fear River paused in front of the restaurant around 9:30 p.m. and opened fire, resulting in the tragic loss of life and multiple injuries. The assailant then fled towards Oak Island via the Intracoastal Waterway.
The U.S. Coast Guard, vigilant in their duties, spotted a person matching the shooter's description loading a boat at a public ramp in Oak Island shortly after 10 p.m. The individual was detained and subsequently handed over to Southport police for further questioning.
Chief Coring revealed that the suspect claims to be a combat veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), though Fox News Digital has not yet verified these assertions. Edge, who reportedly changed his name several years ago, resides in Oak Island and is known to local law enforcement, albeit without a significant criminal history.
The identities of the deceased have not been disclosed, and District Attorney John David conveyed the gravity of the situation, noting that at least one injured victim is "clinging to life" in the hospital. "Sadly, a lot of the victims in this case appear to be not members of our community, but people who are here on vacation," David remarked, highlighting the broader impact of the tragedy.
Edge is also facing multiple weapons charges, with the possibility of additional charges as the investigation progresses. This developing story continues to unfold, and updates are anticipated as more information becomes available.
