In a surprising turn of events, the home and office of John Bolton, the former national security advisor and current anti-Trump commentator, were raided by federal agents on Friday.
This action marks the resurgence of a previously dormant criminal investigation. Bolton, who had been under suspicion for leaking classified information in his 2020 memoir, saw the investigation halted under the Biden administration.
According to RedState, the investigation had progressed to the point of involving a grand jury, and a judge had previously cautioned Bolton that he could face criminal charges if he proceeded with the publication of his book. However, with the election of President Donald Trump, the protective shield that Bolton, a regular on CNN, had enjoyed seemed to have disappeared.
In response to these events, Bolton has chosen to focus his attention on Ukraine. "Donald Trumps Ukraine policy today is no more coherent than it was last Friday when his administration executed search warrants against my home and office. Collapsing in confusion and haste, Trumps negotiations may be in their last throes, along with his Nobel Peace Prize" Bolton stated.
This unexpected shift in focus to Ukraine, especially in the midst of his legal troubles, has raised eyebrows. The peace negotiations that Bolton seems to be so concerned about were not even a consideration when Biden was in office.
Bolton further criticized Trump's Ukraine policy, stating, "President Donald Trumps Ukraine policy is no more coherent today than it was last Friday when his administration executed search warrants against my home and office. Collapsing in confusion, haste, and the absence of any discernible meeting of the minds among Ukraine, Russia, several European countries, and America, Trumps negotiations may be in their last throes, along with his Nobel Peace Prize campaign."
Bolton also took issue with the administration's attempts to hide its disarray behind social media posts, such as Trump comparing his finger-pointing at Russian President Vladimir Putin to then-Vice President Richard Nixon during the famous kitchen debate with Nikita Khrushchev. Bolton questioned why Trump would want to be compared to the only President who resigned in disgrace.
Bolton's stance on Ukraine, which some view as an odd fixation, has been met with criticism. His apparent opposition to the existence of negotiations is seen as a strange stance, especially considering the potential benefits of ending the war.
Bolton's foreign policy decisions have also been called into question. His support for the Obama administration's campaign in Libya, the Iraq War, and the Syrian intervention, which resulted in Christians being slaughtered by the new Islamist government, has led some to label him as one of the worst foreign policy minds in American history.
The decision to hire Bolton as NSA is viewed by some as one of Trump's worst decisions during his first term. His approach to foreign policy, reminiscent of George W. Bush's, was seen as unnecessary and unhelpful.
Despite the criticism and legal troubles, Bolton seems determined to face his challenges head-on. However, the wisdom of this approach remains to be seen. As the situation unfolds, it will become clear whether Bolton's strategy is effective or if it will lead to further complications.
