Chris Matthews, the former host of "Hardball," has recently expressed his belief that the United States is gravitating towards the political stance of President Donald Trump.
Matthews, who made his remarks during an appearance on "Charlie Rose," dismissed recent polls indicating Trump's approval ratings at 37 and 41 percent. He argued that the American public is seeking a robust leader, a role he believes Trump fulfills.
According to RedState, Matthews stated, "To be honest with you, the country is moving towards Trump. These polls, they come out and show him not doing well I don't buy that. His strength is still greater than the Democrats' strength."
Matthews further emphasized his point by comparing Trump's public persona to that of the Democrats. "He is a stronger public figure than the Democratic people," he added. "[Former President Barack] Obama still has tremendous charisma but Trump has strength. And I think that's what all voters look for."
Matthews continued to elaborate on his viewpoint, stating, "[Voters] want a President who is a strong figure. And he's got it. It's just there. And half the country buys it." He further praised Trump's ability to understand and respond to the nation's mood, a quality he believes sets Trump apart from any other President.
Matthews shared, "We have never had a President so instantly spontaneous that he knows this minute, if he had said at four o'clock this afternoon, he would say, 'You know, that's not really true anymore.' He will know the mood of the country." He also mentioned a conversation he had with Trump about the 'Zoolander' movie, highlighting Trump's ability to gauge cultural trends. "I mean, he's instantaneous," Matthews added.
Matthews further praised Trump's ability to stay connected with the nation's pulse, stating, "But he's [Trump] really good at the moment. I mean, he's out there watching television and keeping up, and, 'Is this the right thing to do, what we're doing right now?' Biden couldn't do that in a million years, not a million years. Mondale couldn't do that. They don't have the connection to the electricity of what's going on in the country culturally. And he knows what works."
Despite some voter dissatisfaction with Republicans, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, RedState colleague Sister Toldjah noted that the GOP is still viewed as the party better equipped to address the issues Americans face, compared to the Democrats.
The report highlighted that voters disapprove of the president's handling of the economy, inflation, tariffs, and foreign policy. However, the same voters trust Republicans more than Democrats to handle these issues in Congress.
The disparities are notable, with disapproval of Trump's handling of inflation outweighing approval by 11 points, yet the GOP is trusted more than Democrats to handle inflation by 10 points. Similarly, voters disapprove of Trump's handling of tariffs by 17 points, but Republicans are trusted more than Democrats on the issue by 7 points.
These observations underscore the paradoxical nature of the current political landscape, where dissatisfaction with the President's handling of key issues does not translate into a lack of trust in his party. It also highlights the enduring appeal of strong leadership, as emphasized by Matthews, which continues to resonate with a significant portion of the American electorate.
