The first Black police chief of a Minnesota town apologizes for posting a thin blue-lined flag on the departments Facebook page.
The Daily Wire reports that Police Chief Virgil Green posted an image of the thin blue-lined American flag on the departments Facebook page on January 9. He posted the image on that day to celebrate National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. However, it seems that people were supposedly offended by the fact that he posted this image.
Green wrote the following:
The Golden Valley Police Department, like so many other departments across Minnesota, posted a social media message recognizing this important day for the men and women who serve their communities, including our very own Golden Valley police officers.
He continued by saying:
Our social media post also included an image of the thin blue line flag. While the post was intended to thank our police officers, it appears the image offended some who viewed it. For this, I sincerely apologize.
He also mentioned:
For many, the thin blue line flag has always represented a way to honor the commitment we make as first responders to protect our community.
He followed up by encouraging the community to research the origins of the thin blue line flag and what it means to members of law enforcement. However, he still apologized for having posted it in the first place. He said the following about what people should do to learn more about the origins of the flag and what it means to law enforcement:
While I do not want to go into detail about the purpose of the thin blue line flag, I encourage those interested in clicking the attached link to learn about the history of the flag and the intent of its creator.
At the same time, the Los Angeles Police Department is under fire for removing the thin blue line flag from its stations after receiving a single complaint. The Daily Wire reports that the thin blue flag was hanging at the Rampart police station and that a single complaint was filed against the thin blue line flag, so it was taken down.
Many police departments throughout the country are floundering when trying to figure out how to address situations like this. Many think that it doesnt make sense that so many police departments are bending to the will of a small minority that complains about their flags.
