In a significant drug bust, special agents from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) intercepted a substantial shipment of methamphetamine valued at approximately $2.
4 million.
This seizure followed the discovery by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers of the illicit cargo being smuggled into Texas from Mexico. The driver, accused of transporting these drugs into the United States, was promptly apprehended by DPS troopers.
Governor Greg Abbott took to social media to share images of the confiscated methamphetamine and the apprehended individual. The photographs depict nearly 400 bundles of the potent drug, which CBP's Office of Field Operations officers uncovered during a routine inspection at the Pharr Port of Entry.
According to Breitbart, the officers conducted a thorough examination of a 2012 Freightliner tractor-trailer as it approached from Reynosa, Tamaulipas. Upon discovering a concealed compartment within the trailer, the officers referred the vehicle for a secondary inspection and alerted Texas DPS special agents.
This led to the unearthing of over 390 bundles that tested positive for methamphetamine. Consequently, the agents seized the drugs and arrested 28-year-old Luis Fernando Sarinana Matias, a Mexican national hailing from Reynosa.
The street value of the seized methamphetamine is estimated to exceed $2.4 million. The driver now faces charges of possession of a controlled substance, with the possibility of additional or more severe charges being filed as the investigation progresses.
This incident is not isolated, as CBP officers previously intercepted another methamphetamine shipment at the same border crossing in March. During that operation, a CBP K-9 unit detected the presence of drugs during a secondary inspection, leading to the discovery of 960 packages containing nearly 300 pounds of meth. The officers seized the drugs and handed both the narcotics and the driver over to ICE Homeland Security Investigations.
Bob Price, the associate editor and senior news contributor for Breitbart Texas-Border team, has been instrumental in reporting such developments. As an original member of the Breitbart Texas team, Price frequently appears as a panelist on Fox 26 Houstons "Whats Your Point?" Sunday morning talk show and serves as president of Blue Wonder Gun Care Products.
This latest seizure underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement at the U.S.-Mexico border. It highlights the critical need for robust border security measures to combat the persistent threat of drug smuggling, which poses a significant risk to communities across the nation.
