Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett of Texas has made a firm commitment to initiate an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, should she be elected chair of the House Oversight Committee.
This pledge comes in anticipation of the 2026 midterm elections, where if the Democrats secure control of the House and Crockett is elected ranking member on June 24, she would ascend to the chair position.
According to the Daily Caller, Crockett expressed her intentions on the television program "Inside Texas Politics," stating unequivocally that she would "absolutely" launch an inquiry. She pointed to Elon Musk's involvement with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and Trump's confrontations with Harvard and various law firms as potential grounds for investigation.
Crockett stated, I would absolutely at least do an inquiry. Absolutely. I mean, I think that theres more than enough to inquire about. You know, we knowwell, we dont know. We still dont even know. I brought up Elon Musk a little bit earlier. We dont understand what all they were doing, what kind of deals were even made for Elon to be given this amount of privilege. The firing of the inspectors generals, you know? He went in, next thing you know, inspector generals that were investigating Elon, theyre getting fired.
She further elaborated on her concerns, citing the pressure Trump has exerted on various organizations and his alleged attempts to withdraw resources from institutions such as Harvard. Crockett also claimed that Trump has been leveraging law firms for free legal defense, a service she believes he will need given his propensity to violate the law.
We know that hes shaken down so many of these law firms for free legal fees because hes gonna need them, because the one thing that we know is that he likes to violate the law, whether its criminal or civil. So these things need to be fleshed out and we need to fully understand. And in fact, thats the Trump stuff, she said. And the reason I bring up the Trump stuff is because there is one committee in the Congress that has the authority to actually do oversight over the president. Its the Oversight Committee. It is the only one that has that ability. And so I think that we need to make sure that we do it. I think that no matter what happens, history needs to know the truth.
The position of chair for the Oversight Committee became vacant following the death of Democratic Virginia Rep. Gerry Connolly, the ranking member of the committee, on May 19. Connolly had previously announced in April that he would not seek reelection due to the recurrence of his esophageal cancer.
Crockett reiterated her commitment to investigate Trump on the television program "Alex Witt Reports" on May 25, stating, As someone who serves on the Oversight Committee and hopes to lead the Oversight Committee, I can guarantee you that we will do what we are supposed to do as constitutionally sworn members of the House. She further added, Which means that we will conduct oversight, that means that we will investigate, we will look at whether or not this president himself has violated the Emoluments Clause as relates to say such things as getting a $400 million plane from the Qataris. We also will make sure that were looking into all these business deals that they have going on.
Crockett's firm commitment to investigate Trump's actions during his presidency underscores the ongoing tension between the President and the Democratic party. As the potential future chair of the House Oversight Committee, Crockett's actions could have significant implications for the legacy of Trump's presidency.
