Former Minnesota Police Officer Kim Potter, 50, accidentally killed Daunte Wright during a routine traffic stop.
The officer accidentally grabbed her firearm instead of her stun gun. She served 16 months in Shakopee Minnesota Correctional Facility and will be on supervised release for another eight months after her release.
Potter was a 26-year veteran when the accident happened that ruined her career and landed her behind bars. She had a spotless record. According to Fox News, The deadly confrontation unfolded April 11, 2021, after Wright, 20, was pulled over for expired license tags in Brooklyn Center about 15 miles from where George Floyd was murdered in Minneapolis in 2020. As the event unfolded, it was discovered that Wright had a warrant for his arrest for failing to appear. Then, Potter thought he was attempting to run and reached for her stun gun to stop him. However, she accidentally grabbed her firearm, shooting him and killing him.
Body camera footage shows Potter telling Wright that she will tase him and that she has a taser, clarifying that she thought she had a taser. After firing a single round into Wright, she drops to the ground and says she grabbed the wrong gun.
Potter was then found guilty of both first and second-degree manslaughter. However, the sentence given to her by the judge is far below both what other people see for that charge and the state-recommended minimum. According to Fox News, The sentencing range on first-degree manslaughter is from slightly more than six to about eight and a half years, from which a judge can depart if there are mitigating or aggravating circumstances.
However, new photos show the surprisingly short sentence's incredible impact on the mother of two. Everything from her hair to her face has changed dramatically during her stay behind bars.
