A South Carolina Language Arts teacher who didnt follow the school Districts mandate and instead chose to make a decision on her own has been fired.

When Spartanburg School District 6 officials were made aware of the incident on Friday at Dorman High School, officials took immediate action and addressed the issue with the teacher.

According to Fox Carolina, the teacher told school officials that distributing the article to students in her class was her personal decision, with the intent being to facilitate a class discussion.

The incident revolved around the teacher handing out to her 10th-grade students an unapproved article on LGBTQ+ identity and centered around the International Bear Brotherhood, a subgroup providing men a way to connect and be at ease with their sexual identity.

The article The International Bear Brotherhood: What it is and why its important had not been submitted for approval by school officials. When the incident was brought to the schools attention, the teacher was placed on administrative leave while being investigated.

School officials determined the article inappropriate and unapproved. At the end of the investigation, the school District fired the teacher.

One parent whose child attends Dorman High School told WSPA the incident was disturbing because it goes against their familys values. The parent said, We would be open for discussion and conversation afterwards. But its not something that I feel like should be brought up, and it would aggravate me that it happened to my child.

The parent also noted, I dont wish for anyone to lose their job, and I hope the person who did finds work, but at the same time, we go to school to learn about other things. You dont want views being pushed onto your kids. You want them to go learn academics and let them develop into their life, upon what their own views are.

A meeting for teachers was held recently, according to the information from the school District, reminding them that approval for questionable lessons and materials must be approved. The teacher who was fired attended the meeting.
