Seamus Gray walked with his friends the day after St.
Patricks Day. The group was intoxicated at the time. The 21-year-old was then spotted walking near the Metro station. However, after that, he didnt show up for his 2 PM curfew, leading to a massive hunt for the Navy sailor.
His mother took to social media to say she would not rest until she found him. She flew from Florida to help with the search and described her son as a loving man that loved his country. Many needed clarification as to where he might be. Now, the story has a heartbreaking ending.
According to Fox News, Waukegan Police Department Chief Edgardo Navarro said a body matching Grays physical description was pulled from Waukegan Harbor Wednesday night, just after 7 PM. The clothes on the body also matched a description of the missing sailor, WGN9 reported.
ComEd workers found the body and notified local authorities. Then, the Lake County coroner confirmed the body did belong to Gray. An autopsy of the body has been conducted. According to ABC, Preliminary results from an autopsy conducted Thursday found Gray died from drowning, with no evidence of a significant injury which would have contributed to his death.
Police were able to track Gray using video footage. He tried to enter a bar close to closing time but was turned away because he was highly intoxicated. At that time, he was with friends. Then, video footage from that business and nearby businesses show him alone in the alley behind the bar later on.
Businesses near the water gave police video footage of Gray near the waters edge, too. Now, authorities continue to investigate the incident.
Our hearts and prayers are with the family, friends, and loved ones as they deal with this tragic loss.
