House Democrats took the extraordinary step of trying to have Rep.
Marjorie Taylor Greenes (R-GA) words taken down when she spoke at a Homeland Security Committee hearing. Fox News reports that the Democrats took this measure after she brought up connections between Representative Swalwell (D-CA) and a Chinese spy.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas testified before the Homeland Security Committee to stand up for the Biden Administrations budget proposal. While questioning Mayorkas, Swalwell swiped at Greene for selling t-shirts and other merchandise with the words Defund the FBI on them. He also called for all lawmakers to elevate the rhetoric.
In response, Greene used her time to bring up Swalwells alleged ties to suspected Chinese spy Christine Fang, also known as Fang Fang.
According to Fox News, these alleged ties were first reported on in 2020.
That was quite entertaining from someone that had a sexual relationship with a Chinese spy, and everyone knows it, said Greene and followed this by saying: But thanks for entertaining
Rep. Dan Goldman, D-N.Y., stepped in at that moment and insisted that Greenes words be removed from the official record. He also insisted that she be prevented from speaking further during this hearing. Completely inappropriate, said Goldman.
A motion has been made, said Mark Green (R-TN) and followed that by saying: The committee will suspend, and the gentleman will state the words that he wishes taken down.
Goldman clarified that he wanted all of the words that Greene spoke during this hearing to be removed from the record. Mark Green insisted that he needed to be more specific. Accusations of an affair with a Chinese spy, said Goldman before following up: Those are engaging in personalities, and those words should be taken down, and the gentle lady should not be able to speak anymore in this hearing. The latter part of that is not an appropriate motion, Green responded and also said: but we will evaluate the striking of those words. Give me just a second.
Green asked Congresswoman Greene to retract her words. She said that she refused to do so. Ultimately, Green ruled that the statement objected to would NOT be stricken from the official record.
Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) objected and appealed the ruling saying that he was embarrassed by Greenes words. Fox News reports that later in the hearing, Greene referred to Mayorkas as a liar, and Democrats successfully got those words stricken from the record.
