Former Vice-President Mike Pence still tries to distance himself from President Trump.
Politico reports that Pence has decided to take a shot at Trump on the issue of guns. The National Rifle Association is set to have its annual meeting in Indianapolis, and Pence will speak before the conference during the speech Friday. He is expected to draw significant contrasts between himself and Teech.
Politico reports that an advisor to Pence has informed them that his speech will likely address the recent shootings in Louisville and Nashville. He is expected to make an impassioned plea for more resources for mental health facilities. He is also likely to call for arming police officers better and for providing additional resources to expedite the death penalty for offenders.
He is not going to cover the issue of red flag laws. He is not expected to speak up in support of this type of action as it is seen as one way to distance himself from former President Trump and make the point that he is tougher on gun control than Trump.
It will make for interesting political theater, said one Republican who has close ties to NRA meetings from the past. The individual pointed out how lines between the former President and the former Vice-President will be drawn.
Hes moving away from Trump, not toward him, said longtime Mike Pence friend Mike Murphy. Murphy is also a former member of the Indiana House of Representatives. He said: He seems to be getting a little more confident in his own skin every day.
This is part of the conquest that Pence is on. He must distinguish himself from the man he served for four years as Vice-President. Politico reports that this is the first time Pence and Trump have shared a stage since they left the White House in January 2021. However, it will only be the first of several events that the two will share the scene in the lead-up to the 2024 election. The two are not likely to cross face to face, though, and Trump is always expected to have the last word as he is still considered the frontrunner for the 2024 nomination.
