Breaking Barriers: AI Artists Create 'Fat, Black, and Queer' Characters For Sci-Fi And Fantasy Worlds

Written by Published

Artificial intelligence artists feel that the world of sci-fi and fantasy seriously lacks representation of everyone.

Thats why theyre creating fat, black, and queer superheroes.

The Post Millennial reports, One of the artists, Alex Smith, 47, said he was immersed in everything sci-fi growing up saying, it is kinda like my church. He said it connects to him spiritually. He noticed that it doesnt have much Black (or queer) representation.

He pointed out that people often treat overweight people like second-class citizens in fantasy and sci-fi works. Alex says that they are often used to portray villains or evil. Smith points out that he read a story submitted for a reading series, and the villain was overweight with the weight described in loathsome terms.

Jervae is a 38-year-old AI artist, too. Per The Post Millennial, She said, It sort of sucks to know you are undesirable and underrepresented in the real world and the fantasy world as well. She points out that she has to use very descriptive words, such as extremely fat, broad nose, and ample belly, to recreate a character that looks like herself. If she instructs an AI to create a beautiful personality, it instantly makes a thin character.

These artists have discovered that they often have to ask for accommodation for characters, such as a more oversized couch. Also, the artists creating overweight characters dont have the same options as those creating thin characters. For example, some artists say they cant upload pictures with cleavage, while artists creating skinny models can show much more.

Currently, artists continue to pop up, trying to represent often underrepresented communities. This representation includes trans individuals, those that are overweight, and pretty much anyone that isnt white. Some say AI tools are rooted in white supremacy, but they feel this is still an exceptional opportunity.
