In recent news, former President Donald Trump has come under fire from some on the right for comments made during a Fox News interview with Tucker Carlson in which he praised California Governor Gavin Newsom.
Trump stated that he could never attack Newsom due to the governors friendly demeanor towards him during his presidency. Trumps remarks have led to criticism from some conservatives who see the former presidents comments as an act of favoritism towards one of the countrys most prominent left-wing politicians.
Trumps comments were made during an interview with Fox News Tucker Carlson, in which he referred to Newsom as an ambitious leader who had done a terrible job with California. However, he went on to say that he had always gotten along well with Newsom and appreciated the compliments the governor had given him during his time in office.
Conservative commentator Kurt Schlichter expressed his disappointment in Trump's comments, tweeting, "Im really disappointed in Trump over his kissing up to Gavin Newsom Conservative @GovRonDeSantis is awful because he has not been nice lately? What the hell? Has Trump learned nothing at all?"
Others on the right have also voiced their criticism of Trump, with Chronicles Magazine editor Pedro Gonzalez taking to Twitter to say that Trumps inability to criticize Newsom due to their past friendly relationship indicates that he is closer ideologically to the left than the right.
"Gavin Newsom has pushed some of the most radical policies in the US, including hundreds of billions in reparations," Chronicles Magazine editor Pedro Gonzalez tweeted. "And Trump just said he could never hit him because Newsom was so nice to me. Trump cant fight the left because he identifies more with the left than not."
Despite the backlash, some of Trumps supporters have defended his comments and accused some media outlets of omitting the part of the interview where he criticized Newsoms leadership, suggesting that the criticism is an attempt to boost the chances of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in the 2024 presidential primary race. Donald Trump Jr. also pushed back against the criticism, accusing those who claimed Trump refused to attack Newsom of knowingly lying again.
