On Wednesday, former bank employee Connor Sturgeon caused a senseless rampage that left five dead and eight wounded in Louisville, Kentucky.
The shooter even targeted his former mentor, Dana Mitchell, who recounted how she survived by playing dead during the ordeal. In an interview with CBS News, she revealed how she lay motionless to avoid detection, stating, I tried not to breathe a lot. I didnt want to move around. I didnt want him to see me moving or hear me breathing, because I thought he might shoot me again.
Sturgeon was armed with an AR-15 assault rifle, which he had recently purchased, and continued to fire off rounds even after hitting Mitchell. He was eventually shot dead by police. Mitchell and others who knew Sturgeon expressed shock at his violent actions, with Mitchell recounting how she had been his mentor in his first year at the bank and describing him as very kind and soft-spoken.
Mitchell miraculously survived the incident with only a flesh wound. She spoke to CBS News about the moment she saw Sturgeon with a gun: When I saw him in the hallway with the gun, I thought, Why would he bring that here to show us? It didnt even register to me he was ready to shoot. Mitchell is now coming to terms with the traumatic event that occurred in her workplace, stating, I never imagined this would happen at my place of work or to me. You see it on TV and it happens to other people but it doesnt happen to people you know. But this is one of those things.
The rampage claimed the lives of Tommy Elliott, Jim Tutt, Joshua Barrick, Juliana Farmer, and Deana Eckert. Nickolas Wilt, a rookie cop who was shot in the head, remains in critical but stable condition after undergoing brain surgery. Fellow officer Cory Galloway was also wounded during the shootout that ended the attack. As of late Wednesday, Wilt and another patient were still being treated at the University of Louisville Hospital.
