The Oval Office witnessed a dramatic confrontation on Friday afternoon, with President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance refusing to tolerate the audacity of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
This incident has sparked a flurry of reactions from various political quarters, including leftists, Neocons, and critics of Trump. As reported by RedState, two former political figures, Representatives Liz Cheney (R-WY) and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), were among the first to express their extreme views.
Susan Rice, former National Security Adviser and Ambassador to the U.N., has also joined the fray. A known associate of Barack Obama, Rice appeared on MSNBC to voice her disapproval of the incident.
She suggested that the entire event was a premeditated setup, stating, "It's a very sad day and an embarrassment for the United States on the world stage. But let's step back and analyze what's happened here. I think there's no question that this was a setup."
Rice further criticized the meeting between Trump and Zelensky, claiming that the Ukrainian President was forced into a disadvantageous agreement. "Vladimir Zelensky was compelled to agree to a horrible deal that would have sent Ukraine's minerals to the United States without any concrete security guarantees," she said. She also accused the Vice President of initiating the confrontation, questioning her allegiance in the process.
However, her comments have been met with skepticism. Critics argue that Rice's stance seems more in line with a Ukrainian official than a former US official. They question why she would oppose a deal that appears to benefit the US and whether she truly believes that Zelensky represents his people more democratically than the US President.
Contrary to Rice's claims, reports suggest that Trump was optimistic about reaching a deal and welcomed Zelensky warmly. There was no indication that he was seeking a confrontation. Instead, it was Zelensky who stirred up discord by questioning US support and attempting to embarrass the Vice President.
The press conference between Trump and Zelensky clearly showed that it was the Ukrainian President, not Trump or Vance, who played the antagonist. Both the President and Vice President maintained a respectful and cordial demeanor until Zelensky ignited a public controversy.
Rice's criticism of Trump's handling of foreign affairs is also questionable, given the historical context. During Obama's tenure in 2014, Putin annexed Crimea with minimal resistance. Then, in 2022, under Joe Biden's watch, Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Given these circumstances, critics argue that Rice's opinion may not be the most reliable.
Rice also accused Trump of staging the confrontation for the cameras, claiming it was a ploy to appeal to his base and demonstrate loyalty to Putin. While Putin's threat is undeniable, attempts to portray Trump as a puppet of the Russian leader have consistently failed. As previously stated, negotiating with adversaries is sometimes necessary.
The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war is a tragic situation that urgently needs resolution. While Putin is not a friend of the US, Trump correctly points out that peace cannot be achieved without the willingness of all key players to negotiate.
In light of these developments, it is clear that Susan Rice's advice is neither needed nor desired. The focus should be on resolving the conflict and ensuring the best interests of the United States, rather than engaging in political finger-pointing.
