In a recent turn of events, Fani Willis, the Fulton County District Attorney, is challenging her disqualification from the Trump RICO case by the Georgia Appeals Court.
Willis and her entire office were previously removed from the case due to what the court deemed an "appearance of impropriety." Despite this, the charges against Trump were not dismissed, leaving Willis and her office without the authority to proceed.
According to Gateway Pundit, the disqualification of Willis was due to an alleged romantic relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, whom she had appointed to lead the case. This relationship, the court ruled, created an "appearance of impropriety," leading to the disqualification. Willis, however, has taken her fight to the Georgia Supreme Court, asking them to reverse the decision of the lower court and reinstate her on the case.
The Georgia Supreme Court is under no obligation to hear Willis' appeal. Yet, even if they side with her, Trump will be inaugurated as of next Monday at noon. This leaves at least 14 other co-defendants in the case who may still have to contend with Willis.
Fox 5 Atlanta reported that Willis' petition argues that the 2-1 ruling "overreached the Court of Appeals authority," creating a new standard for disqualification of a prosecutor and disregarding decades of precedent. This move by Willis underscores her determination to remain involved in the case, despite the controversy surrounding her disqualification.
The outcome of this appeal could have significant implications for the ongoing case against Trump and his co-defendants. Whether Willis will be reinstated or not remains to be seen, but it is clear that she is not backing down without a fight.
