In a recent development, Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) has voiced his opinion on the potential internal strife within the Republican party, specifically concerning the House speakership.
Crenshaw's comments came in the wake of the slim approval of the latest spending budget, which was crucial to keep the government functioning. This event has sparked speculation among media commentators, including those at Mediaite, about the possibility of a revolt brewing among discontented Republicans under the stewardship of Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).
According to Mediaite, Crenshaw's views were aired during a Saturday interview on Fox News, where anchor David Asman queried whether Johnson might face a vote to vacate his position. Crenshaw highlighted the significant role President-elect Donald Trump could play in determining Johnson's future as the House leader.
Asman, during the interview, stated, "What is clear, Dan, is that the president-elect has enormous power right now. The Gallup poll shows that hes in a much better position right now in terms of public opinion than he was on January 20th, 2017 when he first took over. Hes got over 51% approval right now. So he has increased his approval rating since the election. So his finger on the scale will make all the difference, wont it?"
In response, Crenshaw said, "Yeah, I think so. Look, if he says dont vote for Johnson, then I think its going to be a very tough speaker race for Johnson. Again, its really not clear who else would be in the waiting there. We remember we went through this. Yeah. And all their major players basically had their heads chopped off. So its not obvious to me that Johnsons done a bad job. Its obvious to me that hes done the best job he can given the circumstances. And he keeps a level head. I think he doesnt lose his goal in the way I would, given what people say about him and what people say, Well, lies, people tell and the games that people play. A lot of this is gamesmanship. People want to hold their vote because they want something, some kind of personal concession from the speaker. I think its pretty gross to do that. But this is what they do. And its unfortunately, you have to understand, too, its very popular in the conservative world to not just go against Democrats, but mostly to go against your own people. Thats the more popular soundbite. Unfortunately, thats a cultural problem that we have."
