It's Good To See Kathy Hochul Finally Take ACTION When It's NEEDED!

In a recent development, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has initiated the dismissal of over a dozen prison staff members following the fatal assault of an inmate earlier this month.

The Democratic governor's directive comes in response to an incident at the Marcy Correctional Facility in Oneida County on December 9, which resulted in the death of 43-year-old Robert Brooks the next day in a hospital.

According to Fox News, the governor's decision was based on an internal review, although the specifics surrounding the events leading to Brooks' death remain undisclosed. Brooks, who had been incarcerated since 2017, was serving a 12-year sentence for first-degree assault.

Governor Hochul expressed her gratitude for the majority of correction officers who perform their duties admirably under challenging conditions. However, she made it clear that there would be zero tolerance for those who overstep their boundaries, violate the law, and engage in unnecessary violence or targeted abuse. "The vast majority of correction officers do extraordinary work under difficult circumstances, and we are all grateful for their service," Hochul said. "But we have no tolerance for individuals who cross the line, break the law and engage in unnecessary violence or targeted abuse."

The Department of Corrections has released a list of 13 employees, including corrections officers, sergeants, and a nurse, who have been suspended without pay. An additional corrections officer who resigned was also included in the list.

Daniel Martuscello III, State Department of Corrections Commissioner, expressed his disapproval of the staff members' involvement, stating that the suspensions were in the best interest of the agency and the communities they serve. "There is no place for brutality in our department and we will vigorously pursue justice against the individuals who committed this senseless act," he said. "These investigations are ongoing and additional suspensions may be issued."

The family of Robert Brooks, expressing their shock and sorrow over his death, conveyed their gratitude towards Governor Hochul for her swift action. However, they also expressed their inability to comprehend how such an incident could have occurred. "We are grateful that Gov. Hochul is taking swift action to hold officers accountable, but we cannot understand how this could have happened in the first place," the family said. "No one should have to lose a family member this way."

State Attorney General Letitia James, also a Democrat, confirmed that her office is investigating the use of force by corrections officers that led to Brooks' death. She stated that her team has secured video footage of the incident, which will be made public once Brooks' family has viewed it. "Law enforcement professionals must be held to the highest standards of accountability, and I am committed to providing New Yorkers with the transparency they deserve," James said.

This incident underscores the need for accountability and transparency in law enforcement, a principle that is fundamental to the preservation of individual freedom and justice.
