In the aftermath of Tuesday's CBS News vice presidential debate, a poll has revealed that independent voters are leaning towards GOP candidate JD Vance over his Democratic counterpart, Tim Walz.
The survey, conducted by SSRS for CNN, disclosed that 54% of independents believed Vance outperformed Walz in the debate, while 46% thought otherwise. This is a significant shift from pre-debate expectations, where 60% of independents predicted a superior performance from Kamala Harris' running mate.
According to The Post Millennial, the shift in independent voters' preference was not the only surprise. The poll also indicated a decrease in support for Walz among several demographic groups. This included a 9-point drop among voters of color, an 8-point drop among voters aged 18 to 49, a 9-point drop among college voters, and an 11-point drop among Harris voters. This shift in support from Walz to Vance is noteworthy, considering that 54% of registered voters had initially predicted a better performance from Walz, compared to 45% for Vance.
The debate was not without its contentious moments. One such instance that gained significant online traction was when Walz stated, "I've become friends with school shooters." The debate moderators, Norah O'Donnell and Margaret Brennan, also faced criticism for their handling of the event. They cut off Vance's microphone when he attempted to respond to a fact check regarding the immigration processes that have led to the current border crisis under the Biden-Harris administration.
Vance expressed his displeasure, stating, "Margaret, the rules were that you guys werent gonna fact check. And since youre fact-checking me, I think its important to say whats actually going on." This incident, among others, may have contributed to the shift in public opinion reflected in the post-debate poll.
