In the wake of Hurricane Helene's devastating impact, a unique team of mountain mules has emerged as an unlikely savior for the stranded citizens of North Carolina.
With hundreds of roads rendered impassable due to storm damage, mudslides, and flood debris, the Mountain Mule Packer Ranch has mobilized its "cherished" pack mules to deliver essential supplies to areas that vehicles cannot reach.
According to The Post Millennial, these four-legged heroes have been tirelessly ferrying food, water, diapers, and critical medical supplies like insulin to desperate families in the state's mountainous regions. These areas, due to their rugged terrain, have proven challenging for traditional aid delivery methods.
The Mountain Mule Packer Ranch lauded their mules on social media, stating, "They call them beasts of burden, we call them our beloved mules. They are capable and willing to work in many conditions most won't. They are not stubborn.....they are wise, and require respect." The company further highlighted the mules' versatility, noting their roles in hauling camping gear, pulling wagons and farm equipment, and even serving in military special forces training, carrying weapons, medical supplies, and wounded soldiers.
Mike Toberer, the owner of Mountain Mule Packers, conveyed to the Associated Press the unique qualifications of his mules in assisting with these critical efforts. He noted that each mule can carry approximately 200 pounds of supplies, and his team, armed with chainsaws, navigates the challenging terrains, pushing the mules through.
The company's website reveals that Mountain Mule Packers "specializes in high altitude crew-served weapons, and extreme terrain pack animal supply trains" designed to "meet multiple needs."
Hurricane Helene, the deadliest hurricane to hit the United States in recent years, has affected millions of residents across Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. The lack of power and internet connections has left citizens unable to communicate, and the death toll, already in the thousands, is expected to rise. Many people remain missing.
In a glimmer of hope amidst the devastation, tech mogul Elon Musk announced that his company, Starlink LLC, would provide free Starlink internet to all citizens in areas affected by the hurricane, a move that could significantly aid in the ongoing relief efforts.
