In the early hours of Saturday, a shootout at a Georgia gun store resulted in injuries to two police officers and the death of a suspected burglar.
The incident occurred at Adventure Outdoors, a sprawling 80,000 square foot gun store and range located approximately 13 miles northwest of Downtown Atlanta.
According to Fox News, Smyrna Police Department Chief Keith Zgonc detailed the sequence of events during a press conference. Responding to a 911 call at 12:16 a.m., officers from the Smyrna and Cobb County police departments arrived at the scene to find an armed individual inside the closed store. A gunfight ensued, during which two Smyrna officers were wounded. The suspect was killed when the officers returned fire.
The injured officers were rushed to a local hospital, where they are currently recovering from non-life-threatening injuries. A SWAT team was subsequently deployed to secure the premises and ensure no other individuals were present. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has since taken over the scene and is conducting a thorough investigation into the incident.
The identity of the deceased suspect remains undisclosed, and it is unclear whether the suspect's intention was to steal weapons from the store. Adventure Outdoors, which boasts approximately 18,000 guns in stock, refers to itself as the "actual largest gun store in the world" on its website.
Cobb County Police Chief Stuart VanHoozer expressed deep concern over the incident, particularly in light of recent police shootings in the metro Atlanta area. "We had a lot of officers come and thats the reason that they came," VanHoozer said, highlighting the significant police response triggered by the nature of the store and the recent violence against law enforcement.
Chief Zgonc echoed these sentiments, expressing his frustration with the increasing hostility towards police officers. "Im angry, it angers me that we have people that want to do this," he said. "They want to take shots at police officers. They want to do us harm and clearly, this individual that was involved in this criminal act necessitated our response."
