Jonathan Holloway, the President of Rutgers University, has made public his intention to resign from his role at the conclusion of the 2024-2025 academic year.
This announcement comes amidst a storm of criticism over his and the university's handling of radical pro-Hamas, anti-Jewish protests that have been taking place on campus.
According to Gateway Pundit, the controversy began to escalate in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Israel on October 7. During a town hall event in April, which was intended to discuss BDS (boycott, divest, and sanction) referendums, a group of pro-Palestinian protesters disrupted the proceedings. These protesters, described as "out of control," were reported to have been shouting anti-Israel slogans such as "one solution, intifada revolution."
The event was prematurely concluded, and Jewish students were escorted from the premises by the police. One student, in a conversation with Fox News Digital, claimed that President Holloway and the university administrators "ran away," leaving the Jewish and pro-Israel students to face an unruly and overtly antisemitic crowd.
Furthermore, the university's 'Students for Justice in Palestine' group issued a list of demands to the institution regarding its stance on the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. During a demonstration in May, pro-Hamas agitators were heard chanting the genocidal slogan, 'From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!'
Holloway, in a statement released on September 17, confirmed his impending departure: "In August, I informed Amy Towers, Chair of the Board of Governors, that the 2024-2025 academic year will be my final year as university president. I will take a sabbatical the following year during which I will return to long-standing research projects before joining the faculty on a full-time basis. This decision is my own and reflects my ruminations about how best to be of service."
U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) responded to Holloways announcement by suggesting that his legacy would be one of "empowering antisemites and terrorist sympathizers." She further stated, "If he resigned today, President Holloways legacy would be one of empowering antisemites and terrorist sympathizers. He must use his final year at Rutgers doing everything in his power to change that, starting by closing the antisemitic, pro-terror Center for Security, Race, and Rights; enforcing the rules; and enacting policies to protect Jewish students and faculty."
