In 2021, Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of Twitter/X, took to the stage as a host.
His monologue pitch, however, failed to impress, falling flat and leaving the audience wanting.
Musk shared his experience at the All In Summit earlier this month, revealing a monologue idea he believed to be exceptional. "So, one of the things that I think everyones been sort of wondering this whole time is, is actually live," Musk said. This statement, while seemingly a classic monologue pitch for hosts apprehensive about comedy, was Musk's attempt to test the waters.
He further explained his idea, saying, "Theres a way to test this, which is, we dont tell them whats going on. I walk on and so, this is the script. I throw it on the ground. Were going to find out tonight, right now, if Saturday Night Live is actually live. And the way that were going to do this is Im going to take my cock out. And if you see my cock, you know its true. And if you dont, its been a lie."
The idea, however, was met with laughter from the panelists at the summit, with one exclaiming, "This is the greatest pitch EVER!" But as reported by Mediaite, the reaction from the cast and crew on Zoom was far from what Musk had anticipated.
"We come in like, like just like, guns blazing with like, ideas. And we dont realize, like, actually, you know, thats not how it works. And that its only, like, actors and they just get told what to do and like, oh. Well, you mean we cant just, like, do funny things that we thought of?" Musk said, reflecting on the experience.
The silence from the cast and crew led Musk and his team to believe the mic was muted. But Musk wasn't done with his pitch. He continued, "So, theres more to it, okay? Thats just the beginning. So, then Im, so now Im like, so I say, like, Im going to reach down into my pants, and Ill stick my hand my pants and Im going and Im going to pull out my cock. And I told this to the audience, and the audience is going to be like, Guh-whaaa? And then I pull out a baby rooster. You know? And its like, okay, this is kind of PG, you know, its not that bad. This is my tiny cock."
Despite Musk's enthusiasm, this comedic masterpiece did not make it to the final broadcast. This incident sheds light on Musk's approach to comedy and his unique perspective on what makes a good joke. It also underscores the importance of understanding the audience and the platform before crafting a monologue or a joke. While Musk's idea may have been amusing to some, it was evidently not in line with the expectations of the cast, crew, or the audience of Saturday Night Live.
