Vice President Kamala Harris has come under fire for what critics have labeled a "new accent" that she unveiled during a Labor Day rally in Detroit, Michigan.
The Vice President's Labor Day activities were centered in the Motor City, a critical battleground state, where she aimed to bolster support among blue-collar union workers ahead of the November election.
According to Fox News, Harris addressed the crowd with a noticeable shift in her dialect, stating, "You better thank a union member for the five-day work week. You better thank a union member for sick leave. You better thank a union member for paid leave. You better thank a union member for vacation time."
The Vice President's altered speech pattern did not go unnoticed, with conservative commentators and social media users quick to criticize. The conservative account Johnny MAGA shared a clip of Harris' speech, deriding her "Detroit speak" as "cringe and fake."
Stephen Miller, a senior advisor to former President Trump, also weighed in on the controversy. "This is her seventh new accent in four weeks," Miller commented. "She has literally never used this accent before. She grew up in Canada. Phoniest politician in all of politics."
Gad Saad, a professor and podcast host, expressed his disdain for what he perceives as Harris' inauthenticity. "There are countless traits that I despise in humans, few as much as inauthenticity," Saad wrote.
GOP strategist Matt Whitlock also criticized Harris, suggesting that her changing accents reflect a broader inconsistency in her political persona. "All of politics is a performance to Kamala Harris," Whitlock said. "She changes fake accents like she changes policy positions and political personas. Today shes talking in a fake southern accent, pretending to be a moderate. Next week shell be back to San Francisco liberal."
The Trump campaign highlighted another instance of Harris' "cringe" accent, where she told a rallygoer, "Let's just get through the next 64 days, how about that!?" before laughing. The social media account Libs of TikTok reacted to the clip, asking, "What did I just watch whats with this new accent? The fakeness and cringe here is off the charts."
Some social media users even compared Harris' accent to the voice of the iconic Looney Tunes character Foghorn Leghorn. Critics also noted that Harris seemed to drop the accent when delivering the same speech later that day in Pittsburgh. "Same speech. Two entirely different accents," observed conservative commentator Greg Price, who went on to label Harris as "the fakest human being that has ever lived."
This is not the first time Harris has been accused of altering her accent to suit her audience. In July, she was criticized for adopting a fake Southern accent at a rally in Atlanta, and during her 2021 overseas trip to France, critics claimed she used a "French accent" while touring a COVID lab. The Harris campaign has yet to respond to these recent allegations.
