In a tragic turn of events, a man implicated in a New Hampshire homicide was fatally shot by police on a bridge linking the state to Maine.
The attorney general's office revealed on Thursday that an 8-year-old child was discovered dead from gunshot wounds in the man's vehicle.
As reported by ABC News, the Piscataqua River Bridge, a major artery on Interstate 95, has been shut down since the early hours of the morning, causing significant traffic congestion as motorists were rerouted to alternative bridges. This bridge serves as a vital connection between Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and Kittery, Maine.
The incident seems to have originated from a domestic dispute in Troy, New Hampshire, where a man allegedly murdered a woman at a residence. The man then reportedly drove approximately 100 miles to the bridge, according to a statement from Attorney General John Formella.
Formella's statement detailed, Early this morning police engaged with the adult male on the bridge in an incident that ended with the male being fatally shot. The Maine Attorney Generals Office is now investigating that officer-involved shooting incident. The statement also revealed the grim discovery of the child, stating, Police on the bridge also found an 8-year-old child fatally shot in the man's vehicle. "The exact circumstances surrounding this incident remain under active investigation."
The public was assured that there was no ongoing threat, although the bridge remained closed in both directions due to the ongoing investigation. The identities of those involved have yet to be disclosed.
The Piscataqua bridge is a heavily trafficked route, with the Maine Department of Transportation estimating that between 70,000 and 80,000 vehicles traverse it daily. This incident has undoubtedly caused significant disruption, but the focus remains on the tragic loss of life and the ongoing investigation.
