In a recent development in Florida, several individuals, including illegal immigrants, were apprehended on charges of illicitly harvesting palmetto berries from private property.
The incident has sparked a heated response from a local sheriff, who has criticized the lawmakers in Washington, D.C., for their "complete and total failure" to ensure the security of the U.S. border.
According to Fox News, Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey disclosed in a video statement that eight suspects, including four illegal immigrants, were implicated in the theft of approximately $7,300 worth of palmetto berries. The stolen harvest, weighing around 9,000 pounds, was discovered in the back of a U-Haul vehicle.
Sheriff Ivey expressed his frustration over the incident, stating, "it is actually what this case revealed about the subjects who were arrested and the fact that they are in our country illegally that drives me absolutely insane and will most likely tick you off as well." He emphasized that the gravity of the situation extends beyond the specific crime committed.
Among the illegal immigrants detained, two were in the process of applying for U.S. citizenship and are currently immune from deportation due to pending court dates concerning their immigration status. Sheriff Ivey further revealed that some of the arrested individuals had been previously deported and had a history of felony arrests.
In a pointed critique of the current immigration system, Ivey stated, "were told that unless they commit a violent felony, theyre not going to be deported no matter how many nonviolent crimes theyve committed." He expressed his exasperation over the fact that individuals with a criminal history are allowed to remain in the country.
Having made multiple trips to the U.S. southern border, Sheriff Ivey has personally observed the escalating influx of illegal immigrants and its subsequent impact on communities nationwide. He clarified, "This is not a failure on our partners at the U.S. Attorneys Office, the Border Patrol or even Department of Homeland Security. This is a complete and total failure on Washington, D.C., for not allowing the laws of our great nation to be enforced."
Sheriff Ivey concluded his statement with a call to action, questioning when the nation would lose patience with individuals illegally entering the U.S. to commit further crimes. He challenged Washington, D.C., officials, stating, "Why dont you allow our Customs and Border Patrol agents to secure our damn border like our laws allow, or get the hell out of the way and Ill do it with the help of sheriffs from across the country who actually believe in enforcing the law and are sick and tired of this crap."
