Megyn Kelly, the conservative commentator, has publicly rebuked actress Glenn Close for her social media post seemingly aimed at Senator JD Vance.
The post was a response to Vance's controversial comments about "childless cat ladies" that resurfaced recently, causing a stir in the political and social spheres.
According to Newsweek, Vance, who is now Donald Trump's vice presidential running mate, made these comments in July 2021, suggesting that the country is being governed by "childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives." The remarks were widely criticized when they resurfaced last month. Vance also proposed that individuals with children should have a more significant say in the democratic process, a statement he made during a speech for the conservative organization, the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, in 2021.
Vance stated, "You should have more of a power, more of an ability to speak your voice in our democratic republic than people who don't have kids." He further added, "If you don't have as much of an investment in the future of this country, maybe you shouldn't get nearly the same voice."
In what appears to be a response to Vance's comments, Close, who played Vance's grandmother in the film adaptation of his bestselling memoir, shared a post on Instagram of herself with her cat. The caption read, "Eve would have left a bleeding mouse head in the bed of anyone who criticized any kind of lady with a CAT!"
Kelly, however, was not impressed by Close's post. On her podcast, she expressed her disappointment, stating that Close "is not grateful for any of those opportunities" that came from starring in the film based on Vance's life. Kelly said, "This is just so gross. You got all those awards because he told his family story and you played someone who is so important to him. And by the way, the whole point of his stories about her were to show you the importance of the most powerful female in his life, the woman who shaped him more than any other, to whom the whole book is an homage."
Kelly further criticized Close for failing to see the importance of Vance's story and instead attacking him as a misogynist because of his comment about cat ladies. She described Close's reaction as "absurd."
Vance's memoir, which has sold at least 1.6 million copies to date, delves into his troubled upbringing, marked by addiction, familial trauma, domestic violence, and generational patterns of abuse. The memoir was adapted into a film in 2020, directed by Ron Howard and released on Netflix. Despite some critics praising the film, it was also nominated for three Razzie Awards, a program that ironically celebrates the worst in cinema. Close was nominated for worst supporting actress.
Kelly continued her critique of Close, suggesting that the actress should have refrained from commenting on Vance. She said, "I just feel like, have the class to say, 'I'm gonna set this one out, you know. Of course she's voting Democrat. Nobody thought otherwise... Just have the class to sit this particular one [out]. Not every fight requires you to participate."
Kelly, a former Fox News host, found Close's comment to be "just so nasty." She also criticized actress Charlize Theron, who portrayed Kelly in a film about the downfall of late media mogul Roger Ailes at Fox News following allegations of sexual misconduct.
Kelly claimed, "Charlie Theron and her friends basically cribbed my entire book for that movie and she played yours truly. And then on her press tour, she just went on out and kept dumping on me. It was like, first of all you stole my book. You stole my very intimate story and you didn't pay me anythingnot that it was for saleand then... you took all this time to play this story. You took absolutely no time to actually get to know me and then you decide to just spend your whole press tour dumping on me. Like what? Hollywood is disgusting. Just take your f****** award and slink away."
Kelly's comments highlight the ongoing tension between Hollywood and conservative figures, a divide that seems to be widening in the current political climate.
