In a series of events that unfolded in 2014, 2020, and 2021, three Democratic leaders, former Missouri Governor Jay Nixon, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, made decisions that led to significant property damage, business losses, and even loss of life.
Their refusal to deploy the National Guard during times of civil unrest has raised questions about their leadership and their commitment to protecting their constituents.
According to Gateway Pundit, in November 2014, Governor Nixon refrained from deploying the National Guard in Ferguson, Missouri, following the court verdict that acquitted Officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of Michael Brown. The decision led to violent protests, resulting in the looting and burning of the business district for the second time in six months. "Nearly half of the roughly 500 businesses operating in Ferguson and adjacent communities, such as Dellwood and Jennings, suffered property damage, were destroyed, or lost revenue as a result of the coordinated Ferguson protests and riots," the report stated.
Governor Nixon's decision was reportedly influenced by the Democratic party's reluctance to present an image of "militarized police" to the protesters. The Ferguson Mayor, Knowles, reportedly tried to contact Governor Nixon on the night of the rioting but was unsuccessful.
Fast forward to May 2020, Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota also declined to call in the National Guard during violent protests in Minneapolis following George Floyd's death. The city was set ablaze, and businesses were destroyed. "More than 1,500 businesses in Minneapolis and St. Paul were damaged or destroyed in the George Floyd riots. Many of those businesses remained closed a year later," the report noted. Governor Walz reportedly dismissed the National Guard as "19-year-old cooks" when addressing the press.
The third incident occurred in January 2021 when former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi declined to deploy the National Guard before and during the riots at the US Capitol on January 6. In a video released by the House Oversight Committee in June 2024, Pelosi was seen taking responsibility for the protests and rioting at the US Capitol. "I take responsibility," Pelosi stated.
John Solomon at Just the News reported in July 2024 that Pelosi's top security aides had received warnings about a potential Capitol breach the night before the January 6 protests. Despite this, Pelosi chose not to call in the National Guard. The report suggested that Pelosi, along with Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, turned down thousands of National Guard troops at the Capitol on January 6 for political reasons.
The report also alleged that the FBI, under Chris Wray, failed to notify the Trump administration and his cabinet secretaries about the potential for violence at the Capitol. Capitol Police Chief Steve Sund reportedly testified that he had requested House and Senate security officials to place the D.C. National Guard on standby, but his request was denied.
The report further claimed that Pelosi, Mayor Bowser, and other government officials turned down the National Guard, suggesting they might have "hoped" for an "insurrection." Pelosi later refused to release her communications surrounding January 6, and Democrats allegedly destroyed evidence from their interviews with officials involving the January 6 riots.
The report concluded by stating that Pelosi's actions led to the deaths of four Trump supporters, an officer who died the next day from a stroke, and hundreds of injured Americans. It also claimed that hundreds of individuals and families were torn apart and destroyed, and yet, former Governor Jay Nixon, Governor Tim Walz, and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi have not been held accountable for their actions.
