Mark Hamill, the renowned actor, has come under fire on social media for mocking the bandage worn by former President Donald Trump on his right ear.
This incident comes in the wake of an assassination attempt on Trump during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The attempt on Trump's life occurred on a Saturday afternoon while he was addressing his supporters as the presumptive Republican nominee. Following the sound of gunfire, Trump was seen clutching his right ear as security personnel swarmed around him. The alleged assailant, a 20-year-old named Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, was neutralized by the Secret Service, as reported by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
On Monday, Trump made an appearance at the Republican National Convention sporting a conspicuous bandage over his right ear. Hamill, known for his role as Luke Skywalker, took to social media to ridicule the former president's bandage.
Hamill posted a close-up photo of Trump with his bandage on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption, "1st APPEARANCE of ludicrously oversized ear bandage, apparently not needed prior to tonight [ear emoji and rolling on the floor laughing emoji]." The phrase "ludicrously oversized" is a nod to a joke from a TV series. As of this writing, the post has garnered 3.5 million views and thousands of comments, many of which were critical of Hamill.
One Trump supporter retorted, "You would've s*** yourself and cried in the fetal position, needing Secret Service to carry you out and coddle you with a milk bottle. You wouldn't know about oversized anything, as the mushroom and marbles in your pants are your only reference." Another user on X remarked, "Mark Hamill is a weak little man that is filled with hate and anger." A third person chimed in, "It's so depressing how lame Luke Skywalker is in real life."
However, not all comments were against Hamill. Some users agreed with his sentiment. One person noted, "Images from earlier today had no bandage, no visible wound that I could see." Another commented, "Exactly. They could've just used one of these. To cover his alleged 'wound,'" accompanied by photos of two small, circular Band-Aids. A third person expressed skepticism about the severity of Trump's injury, "We're supposed to believe his ear received a hit from an AR-15 [eye roll emoji]."
This is not the first time Hamill, a vocal supporter of President Joe Biden, has publicly criticized Trump. On April 9, he announced his intention to vote for Biden in the 2024 election. "BREAKING: Mark Hamill has announced he will be supporting President Biden over Donald tRump," he posted on X.
In the lead-up to May 4, a date celebrated by fans as "May the Fourth" due to its phonetic similarity to the iconic line "may the force be with you," Hamill posted a series of pro-Biden and anti-Trump political messages. "May The First Not Quench Your Thirst For Biden's Re-election! #BidenHarris2024," Hamill posted on May 1. The following day, he wrote, "May The Second Biden Administration Be As Productive and Successful As The 1st." On May 3, he criticized Trump's attempt to overturn the election results, "May The Third Be Absurd That The Guy Who Tried To Steal A Fair Election Is Allowed To Run Again."
Hamill also praised Biden as "Joe-bi Wan Kenobi" during a surprise appearance at the White House on the same day. He arrived at the press conference wearing Biden-supplied sunglasses and lauded the president's legislative accomplishments. On May 4, he shared a photo of himself with the president in the White House, captioning it, "May The Fourth Be The Day A Make-Believe Defender Of The Galaxy Met A Real-Life Defender Of Democracy."
