In a surprising turn of events, Peter Navarro, a former adviser to ex-President Donald Trump, is set to leave his prison cell to address the Republican National Convention (RNC).
Navarro, a key figure in Trump's trade policy, will be released from a federal penitentiary in Miami to deliver his speech at the convention taking place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This information was shared by sources privy to the RNC's itinerary, as reported by The Associated Press.
According to the Daily Caller, Navarro's release is scheduled for Wednesday, providing him with just enough time to catch a flight to Milwaukee and address the RNC before its conclusion on Thursday. The specific time slot for his speech remains undisclosed. The RNC has yet to respond to requests for comments from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
Navarro, who has been a vocal critic of his conviction for defying a Jan. 6 Committee subpoena, has referred to his imprisonment as a political act and a "death sentence." He previously told the Daily Caller, Lawfare is real. Lawfare is wrong Were not supposed to act like Communist China or a Banana Republic. But thats the growing perception of our justice system. Im in prison not for any crime but rather as a matter of honor and duty for defending the constitutional separation of powers.
The charges against Navarro, which were filed in September, arose from his refusal to comply with a Jan. 6 Committee subpoena. He invoked executive privilege to decline to testify and to withhold documents from the committee. Steve Bannon, another former White House adviser, was also convicted for defying a subpoena related to the Jan. 6 investigation and is currently serving a four-month prison sentence.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) had recommended a harsher sentence for Navarro, suggesting six months of imprisonment and a $200,000 fine, as opposed to the final sentence of four months and a $9,500 fine. The DOJ argued that Navarro's refusal to comply with the subpoena was an "assault" on the rule of law, and his "defiance and contempt deserves severe punishment," as stated in court filings.
Navarro was apprehended by FBI agents in June 2022 at Ronald Reagan National Airport and subsequently charged in the U.S. District Court of Washington, D.C. He has since been serving his sentence in a federal prison, an experience he described to the Daily Caller as far from the "Club Fed" that many perceive it to be.
Navarro painted a grim picture of prison life, stating, Its a dangerous place health-wise. The low-protein, high-carb, no-fresh-vegetable diet exacerbates problems like diabetes, colon cancer, and heart disease. Im fortunate I dont take any medicines, because prescription drugs are in short supply at the daily pill line, and a lot of inmates needlessly suffer from symptoms that their prescription drugs would otherwise ameliorate. Im among about 200 inmates in close dorm quarters a new strain of COVID hit a few weeks ago and spread like wildfire.
Despite the challenges he faces, Navarro's upcoming release and subsequent address at the RNC underscore his continued influence within the Republican party and his unwavering commitment to conservative values.
