The U.S. State Department has vehemently denied allegations that President Biden neglected a scheduled meeting with German officials in favor of rest.
The Wall Street Journal had previously reported that the President had missed a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, which was set to take place at the Schloss Elmau resort in Bavaria after the G-7 summit in June 2022.
The Wall Street Journal's report suggested that Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived at the early evening gathering without President Biden, announcing that the President would not be attending due to his need for sleep. This information was reportedly provided by two anonymous sources. When Fox News Digital sought clarification from the State Department, spokesperson Matthew Miller firmly denied the allegations. "That is absolutely not accurate," Miller stated. "Secretary Blinken never said that or anything like it."
The State Department's response to the Wall Street Journal was identical, dismissing the claims as unfounded. An insider familiar with the 2022 meeting described the gathering as informal, asserting that President Biden was never expected to attend.
In the wake of criticism following President Biden's performance against former President Trump at the first presidential debate, Secretary Blinken has been a staunch defender of the President. At a Brookings Institute event on July 1, Blinken argued that global observers would not be deterred from supporting Biden due to his confused demeanor during the debate.
"They've seen a President who's reinvested America, reinvested America in the world, reinvested in these alliances, in these partnerships in ways that they seek and want," Blinken said. He further claimed that "confidence in American leadership has gone up dramatically" during Biden's term in the Oval Office.
