In a recent MSNBC segment, host Michael Steele took aim at Democratic insiders for their hasty reactions to President Joe Biden's lackluster debate performance.
Steele, a former head of the Republican National Committee, urged Democrats and liberal pundits to exercise restraint and consider their actions carefully before pushing for Biden's withdrawal from the race.
According to Raw Story, Steele's comments came in response to the widespread alarm following Biden's less than stellar debate against Donald Trump. "The big freak out Thursday night even stunned me. I mean, in politics it was so immediate to me, so fast," Steele remarked. He contrasted the Democrats' reaction to the Republicans' seemingly unwavering support for their candidate, regardless of his flaws. "On the Republican side it's like 'We're good, our guy is a criminal, our guy is a sexual predator, we're good.' Democrats: 'Oh my god, he slurred a word!'"
Symone Sanders-Townsend, Steele's co-host, interjected, arguing that Biden's performance was more than just a minor slip-up. "He did not just slur a word, it was a bad performance," she said. Steele conceded, "I will not take away from that, I got it, it was a bad performance, it did not meet anyone's expectations."
However, Steele expressed his bewilderment at the Democrats' swift decision to abandon their candidate. "The thing that amazes me is just the immediate decision by so many in the party to just go: 'Okay, I'm done, I can't do this.'" He added, "On my side of the aisle, I would hunker down, get the press release out, close the doors, we are going to work it out and when we get outside, we will steamroll."
Steele's remarks underscore the stark contrast between the two parties' approach to handling their candidates' missteps. It raises questions about the Democrats' resilience and their ability to rally behind their candidate in challenging times.
