In a peculiar incident that unfolded in Midtown Manhattan, a man was seen hurling patio furniture from a 20-story highrise, an act that was captured on camera.
The man, identified as Jean Luke Olivier, 33, was reportedly in the throes of a paranoid crisis, as revealed by his older brother, Jean Bernard Olivier, to The New York Post.
Bernard, 51, received a distressing call from his younger brother two days prior to the incident. "People are trying to kill me," Luke had confided in him. "I told him he needed to go see a doctor, he needed psychiatric help," Bernard shared, having learned about his brother's arrest from The Post.
This was not the first instance of Luke exhibiting erratic behavior, as reported by Bernard. Luke, originally from Haiti, moved to Miami in early 2023 to live with Bernard. However, due to "anger" issues, he was asked to leave the house during the winter. "He had some trouble with my wife, my daughter They were arguing," Bernard recounted. "When I got home from work one day, I told him he had to leave."
After leaving Miami, Luke first relocated to Arkansas to live with a girlfriend, and later moved to New York City following their breakup. Bernard expressed concern about his brother's mental health, stating, "From the way hes been acting" since arriving in the US, "I think he has mental problems."
According to police sources, prior to his furniture-throwing episode, Luke had visited the Consulate General of Haiti at 555 Fifth Ave. He was subsequently arrested and charged with felony reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. Despite pleading not guilty, he was released without bail by a Manhattan judge on Tuesday. Attempts to reach Luke for a comment were unsuccessful.
