The Biden administration has been under scrutiny for the significant increase in Turkish illegal immigrants apprehended at the southern border of the United States.
According to federal data, the number of Turkish migrants crossing the border illegally has surged from approximately 1,400 in fiscal year 2021 to an alarming 15,000 in each of the subsequent fiscal years, 2022 and 2023.
The New York Post, having obtained social media posts from the site Telegram, revealed that smugglers have been advertising and organizing crossings, boasting about the ease of the process. The majority of these migrants have been entering through the San Diego Sector, which has now become the busiest entry point for illegal immigrants in the nation.
The rise in illegal crossings has been attributed to the perceived laxity of the Biden administration's border control policies. The administration's approach has been contrasted with that of Texas, which has taken decisive action to secure its section of the southern border.
The New York Post reported, "There were roughly 1,400 Turkish migrants encountered by border agents along the U.S.-Mexico border in fiscal year 2021, which exploded to more than 15,000 each in fiscal years 2022 and 2023, according to federal data. Most of the Turkish border crossers who came last year crossed into the San Diego border region which earlier this year became the busiest entry point in the nation for migrants entering the US illegally."
The Biden administration's handling of the border situation has been inconsistent. In March, President Biden stated that he did not have the authority to take executive action on border control. "We need more forces on the border! I dont have the authority to do that! Biden exclaimed. However, the administration recently announced plans to take executive action at the border, even reaching out to border town mayors as part of their initiative.
Critics argue that these measures are too little, too late. It is estimated that 10 to 12 million illegal immigrants have entered the U.S. under the Biden administration, a figure equivalent to the population of 41 individual states. The administration's perceived failure to secure the border has been a point of contention, particularly among conservative circles, who argue for stricter border control policies and enforcement.
