The esteemed U.S. District Court Judge Larry Hicks, a George W. Bush appointee in 2001, tragically lost his life in a vehicular accident in Nevada, as confirmed by local authorities.
At the time of his death, Judge Hicks was 80 years old.
Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam expressed his grief over the incident, stating, "Todays news regarding the Honorable Judge Larry R. Hicks who served Nevada for over 53 years is tragic." The statement was released on the social media platform, Twitter.
Judge Hicks had an illustrious legal career spanning over five decades. His journey in the legal field began in 1968 as a prosecutor at the Washoe County District Attorneys Office. Since 2013, he had been serving as a senior District Court Judge, managing an active caseload.
The unfortunate incident occurred outside the federal courthouse in downtown Reno, Nevada, at 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday. The Reno Police Department and the Washoe Sheriffs Department confirmed that Judge Hicks was struck and killed by a car. Following the accident, he was immediately rushed to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The driver involved in the accident remained at the scene and is reportedly cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
Chris Hicks, Judge Hicks' son and the current Washoe County District Attorney, paid a heartfelt tribute to his father. He said, "Today, our community lost an extraordinary man. Judge Larry Hicks was a deeply admired, lawyer and judge, a devoted friend, mentor, and a committed servant to the administration of justice."
Chris Hicks further emphasized his father's dedication to his family, stating, "To us, he was first and foremost, a man who put nothing before family. He was a hero in all manners, a loving husband of nearly 59 years, a doting dad, an adoring Papa, and brother. His loss is beyond comprehension."
Sheriff Balaam remembered Judge Hicks for his love for his community and his family. He quoted Judge Hicks, who once said, "My greatest thrill in life is my family."
Balaam added, "Larry Hicks was a one of a kind man, revered in our community and, most importantly, beloved by his family. On behalf of my family and the men and women of the Sheriffs Office, we extend our deepest condolences to Larrys son Chris, the current District Attorney, and all of Larrys family. Judge Hicks legacy will forever be noted in Washoe County."
