Renowned actor Kevin Spacey made a comeback to television on Thursday, engaging in a candid interview with NewsNation's Chris Cuomo.
During the conversation, Spacey expressed his concerns about the #MeToo movement, stating that it has "swung very, very far in the direction of unfairness."
Spacey, who has faced sexual misconduct allegations in both the U.S. and U.K., defended his position to Cuomo. The actor has managed to successfully contest the majority of these allegations in court. "I feel very strongly that whatever mistakes Ive made in my life, whatever choices I made that werent the best, that I paid a price. Its been seven years," Spacey said.
The actor further elaborated on his journey of self-improvement over the past seven years. "Im trying to show that Ive listened, Ive learned, Ive got the memo, Im not going to behave in any way in the future that is questionable," he said. He also mentioned his efforts to make amends with those he felt he owed, and expressed his desire to return to work.
Spacey shared his perspective on the current state of due process and fairness in the country. He acknowledged the significant impact of the #MeToo movement, but cautioned against the potential for unfairness as the pendulum swings too far in one direction. "I think its swung very, very far in the direction of unfairness and not allowing people and Im not just talking about myself, but a whole lot of people," Spacey said.
The actor also drew parallels between his situation and Cuomo's own experience with cancel culture. He expressed his relief at Cuomo's return to television, but warned against the pendulum swinging too far in the opposite direction. He reiterated his belief in the importance and value of the #MeToo movement.
Cuomo, however, pointed out a key difference between their situations, noting that many of Spacey's allegations had gone to trial. He questioned Spacey on how he planned to regain public trust, given that his legal victories were not enough for some people.
In response, Spacey acknowledged the need to rebuild trust. "I have to work very hard on rebuilding the trust that some may have lost in me. I have to demonstrate every single day, in every single experience and environment that Im in, that I have in fact listened. That I am ready to move forward," he said.
Spacey concluded the interview by sharing a shift in his personal goals. "In some ways, my goal has actually changed, Chris. I used to always want to be just the best actor, and now I want to prove that Im a man of great character," he said.
