It seems that House Democrats, at least some of them, are highly concerned about the developments in Israel right now.
Rep. Rosa DeLauro, the number one Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, has been responsible for sending a letter to President Biden.
Jta.org reports that the letter from Democrats is asking the President to use all diplomatic tools available to try to get Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to scrap his legislation that could take away a significant amount of power from the top courts in Israel.
The letter also continues by saying that Democrats oppose the annexation of the West Bank and support a state of Palestinians in the area.
Jewish Telegraphic Agency obtained a copy of the letter. The letter reportedly reads that the signers express:
our deep concern regarding the planned changes to the structure of the Israeli judiciary, the fragile security situation in the West Bank, and the threat of partial or full annexation of areas that would most certainly be part of a future Palestinian state.
The letter then reads:
We urge you to use all diplomatic tools available to prevent Israels current government from further damaging the nations democratic institutions and undermining the potential for two states for two peoples.
The letter had the signatures of 92 House Democrats (almost half of all House Democrats).
One of the reasons for so much attention on the letter is the fact that it has such an alarmist tone and that Democrats seem to feel that Netanyahus new governing coalition is going to take some far-right actions in Israel. That is a distinct possibility since the coalition represents many hard-right parties, and some feel that it will be necessary to keep those members appeased by taking some actions that are potentially more to the right than what the government in Israel typically takes.
The letter from Democrats continues by saying:
We are profoundly concerned that the recent violence and increased tensions could spiral into a major conflict, despite the recent steps taken. and
U.S. Central Intelligence Agency Director William J. Burns recently warned that Israel appears to be on the brink of confronting a third intifada.
