In a recent segment aired on MSNBC, Republican voters in Georgia expressed that the ongoing legal battles faced by former President Donald Trump have only intensified their support for him.
This comes as recent polls indicate that Trump is leading President Joe Biden by 9% in Georgia, despite facing an election interference case in the state and an ongoing trial in New York.
The voters interviewed by MSNBC correspondent Blayne Alexander conveyed that the legal issues surrounding Trump are perceived as persecution, reinforcing the image of the former president as a fighter. Antonio Jones, one of the voters, stated, "Its actually caused me to support him more. I just dont believe that its a coincidence we have a trial happening in Atlanta, we have one happening in New York, so the question people are beginning to ask themselves like I did, is like, why now?
Trump's victory in Georgia was narrow in 2016, but he lost the state to Biden in the 2020 presidential election. Despite this, his supporters remain steadfast. Thaden Rumbaugh, a first-time voter in the upcoming 2024 election, expressed his admiration for Trump's resilience, stating, I mean hes taking so much just defense from news and everything, but he still hasnt given up. He keeps fighting to do whats right.
Polls conducted since the commencement of jury selection in Trumps New York trial reveal that a potential conviction would not dissuade voters from supporting the former president. Many Americans also believe that Trump did not engage in any illegal activities and is being treated fairly during the trial.
Lisa Babbage, another voter, shared her observations about the changing political landscape. Ive talked to many people who formerly identified as a Democrat. They have changed their political persuasion to independent and they are looking forward to voting for Trump. Because now they find something in common with a political candidate at that level.
Babbage further noted that many people feel persecuted by the American justice system and can relate to Trump's situation. Its not a stretch for them to think that Trump may be a victim as well, she said.
Trump's support among black men has notably increased, with an April poll by The Wall Street Journal showing a surge to 30% in seven battleground states. This is more than double his nationwide backing among this demographic in the 2020 election.
Sammy Baker, the Gwinnett County GOP chairman, echoed the sentiment of many Trump supporters, stating, Its pretty much everybody says theyre picking on him. People are tired of going after him and you see it in so many areas. Its really not a big issue in the party. Actually, theyre really making everyone mad and they look at a big bully and the government is the bully.
