A Roosevelt, New Jersey, woman opted to burn her house down rather than face eviction.
The Post Millennial reports that her landlord was trying to do everything that they could to get the tenant to move out so that they could sell the property. She and dozens of cats that lived in the house with her are now dead in the house's ashes.
The fire set by the tenant quickly jumped over to an adjoining property as well. The residents of that property could escape their homes unharmed, but the fire took out all of their possessions.
CBS News reports that the fire began to break out at 11 am on Wednesday and burnt the structure to its core.
New Jersey State Police Lt. Lawrence Peele said that the tenant turned on her gas in the apartment before igniting it. Her identity has yet to be identified to the public. The police also state that the woman announced her intentions to burn down her property ahead of time. She spoke with her neighbors about her plans and seemed to warn them that she would do this ahead of time to let them know what she had in mind.
Neighbor Erin Luca said, "They knocked on our door this morning," and "Thank God it was a pretty loud knock. They told us to leave. She was threatening with a bomb or to bomb the house and ended up with a fire."
Emma Quackenbush spoke with NBC News and said that the unit she had lived in for the last twenty-two years was burned beyond any ability to make it worthwhile for someone to live in anymore. Given this situation, she was also upset that she had lost many possessions.
Roosevelt Mayor Peggy Malkin spoke with the Asbury Park Press and said that the tenant had lived in her home for the last ten years. The Mayor mentioned, "She had many, many cats," and that she had enough to build a "cat house" on the property.
Reports are that the woman worked as a pet sitter in her neighborhood. She made money by watching other people's pets for them while they were away at work. The tenant was being forced out by her landlord after all of this time because the landlord wanted to sell the property.
