Russian forces have successfully seized control of Ukraine's Soviet-era coke plant in Avdiivka, following Ukraine's withdrawal of troops due to ammunition shortages.

According to a statement from Russia's defense ministry reported by Reuters, the "Centre" grouping of troops launched an offensive operation and now has full control of the coke plant, with Russian flags raised on the administrative buildings. Aerial footage reveals multiple explosions at the coal-based fuel plant.

The defense ministry disclosed that Russian troops have advanced approximately 9 km (5 miles) in the region, with plans for further advancement, as per Reuters.

Ukraine made the decision to withdraw its troops from Avdiivka on Saturday, citing a critical lack of ammunition exacerbated by delayed U.S. military aid. The withdrawal was a strategic move to prevent the complete encirclement of Ukrainian forces by Russian troops after prolonged conflict.

Russian President Vladimir Putin hailed the withdrawal as a triumph, commending the Russian troops for their actions.

General Oleksandr Syrskyi characterized the withdrawal as a tactical maneuver to safeguard the lives and well-being of Ukrainian servicemen, emphasizing the significant losses inflicted on the enemy during the conflict.

President Joe Biden engaged in a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy post-withdrawal, reiterating unwavering U.S. support for Ukraine and urging Congress to swiftly pass the funding bill to replenish Ukrainian forces.
