Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas criticized Missouri Governor Mike Parson, accusing him of using a racial "dog whistle" in his recent remarks about the shooting incident.
Speaking on the radio program "Up to Date" with KCUR host Steve Kraske, Mayor Lucas expressed his concerns about Governor Parson's choice of words, stating, But thugs is a dog whistle in the most classic sense and I have seen this dog whistle time and again.
In the interview, Mayor Lucas delved into the concept of a "dog whistle" in politics, highlighting its use as coded language to convey messages to certain biased groups. He also addressed the issue of gun violence in Kansas City, emphasizing the need for stricter gun control measures.
Furthermore, Mayor Lucas clarified that the delay in revealing the identities of the shooters involved in the crime was due to their status as juveniles, not their race, despite facing adult charges in connection with the mass shooting.
Earlier in 2021, Mayor Lucas had announced a significant budget cut of $47 million from the KC Police Department, citing a commitment to "listening to black and brown people." He defended this decision by stating that the reduction was not substantial and criticized external suggestions on crime-solving strategies from non-city residents.
