Russia tested something known as a SARMAT intercontinental ballistic missile during Biden's surprise visit to Ukraine in the last few days.
The West nicknamed their system "Satan II" because of this missile's ability to deliver multiple nuclear warheads simultaneously. Newsmax reports that the Russians are said to have tested this missile while President Biden was in Ukraine, but it appears that the ICBM test was a failure.
One official told CNN that Russia notified the United States that it intended to perform this test. Another source said that the United States was not at risk because of this test. They also said that this was NOT viewed as an escalation or provocation.
The Russians have tested this type of missile and have even had successful tests of the missile before. However, the test was not mentioned during the State of the National address. However, it was believed that President Putin would have mentioned a successful test if it had been successful when he gave his State of the National address.
Putin did deliver a lengthy State of the National address, it went on for approximately two hours, but he did mention that Russia would be suspending the New START nuclear treaty it had made with the United States.
National security adviser Jake Sullivan stated that US officials notified Moscow about Biden's visit to Ukraine on Sunday. They wanted to inform the Russians about their intentions to have the President in Ukraine.
Newsmax reports that Putin had performed other ICBM tests and reported on successful tests. When he announced successful tests, he said they would "give thought to those trying to threaten Russia."
This particular missile has a payload of 10 tons and can carry up to 15 nuclear warheads on it at the same time. It also has a range of up to 6,835 miles. Thus, this type of missile has extreme destructive potential if used in a real war situation.
Technically, the Russian plans stayed just outside the US and Canadian airspace but came very close to Alaska's Air Defense Identification Zone. This raises tensions worldwide as this test comes during the same week the Russians reported it came near Alaskan airspace, forcing NORAD to respond. This was a massive danger for the entire world as it is something no one wants to see happen.
