Several illegal immigrants in Phoenix, Arizona, who were captured on video assaulting New York City police officers have been apprehended by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security Investigations.
The suspects were arrested on Monday night at a Greyhound bus station in Phoenix, according to sources from ICE.
Following their release from custody without bail in NY, four of the suspects, Darwin Andres Gomez, Kelvin Servita Arocha, Wilson Juarez, and Yorman Reveron, fled to California. However, law enforcement later apprehended Jhoan Boada, Jandry Barros, and Yohenry Brito.
The decision to release the illegal immigrants without bail has faced criticism. New York City progressive District Attorney Alvin Bragg defended his choice, stating that the video evidence of the attack was insufficient to hold the suspects, as authorities were unable to definitively identify each defendant.
New York Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her concerns during a recent news conference, stating that she intended to discuss the matter with Bragg. Hochul emphasized that an assault on a police officer should be considered a bail-eligible offense. She also highlighted the potential for deportation, as there are more than 100 crimes that can lead to removal from the country.
