In a recent development, former President Donald Trump has extended his support to Texas Governor Greg Abbott in his ongoing dispute with the Biden administration over border security.
Trump has urged states to dispatch their National Guards to the border and pledged to collaborate closely with Texas to counter the "invasion" if he is re-elected in January 2025.
Trump expressed his support for Abbott on Truth Social, accusing President Biden of attempting to "tie the hands" of the Republican governor to allow the "invasion" to continue unchecked.
The tension between Texas and the Biden administration, which has been simmering for months, reached a boiling point recently when Texas took control of the Shelby Park area in Eagle Pass and barred Border Patrol from entering. This move sparked protests and legal threats from the administration.
This week, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the administration, granting an emergency appeal to allow agents to continue cutting border wire installed by Texas, overturning a lower court's decision that had prohibited the administration from doing so.
The conflict between the two parties dates back to 2021 when the migrant crisis intensified, and Texas initiated Operation Lone Star to bolster resources at the border. The administration has recently filed a lawsuit against an anti-illegal immigration law that empowers state and local law enforcement to arrest illegal immigrants. It has also sued over Texas's placement of buoys in the Rio Grande, arguing that immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility and Texas is overstepping its bounds.
In a recent statement, the White House criticized Governor Abbott's actions, stating, "Whether it is leaving migrants on the side of the road in the dead of winter, installing razor wire to make Border Patrols job more dangerous, promoting extreme and unconstitutional laws like S.B. 4, or his latest actions in Eagle Pass, Governor Abbott has repeatedly proven that he is not interested in solutions and only seeks to politicize the border."
The statement further emphasized the President's commitment to immigration reform, stating, "The President has been clear that we need adequate resources and policy changes, and that our immigration system is broken. That is why on his first day in office he presented Congress with a comprehensive immigration reform plan, and that is why he is working to find a bipartisan agreement with Congress that includes funding and meaningful reforms."
This week, Abbott invoked a "right to self-defense" and declared an "invasion" to exercise his authority, which he refers to as "the supreme law of the land and supersedes any federal statutes to the contrary."
Trump has called for "full support" for Abbott and urged "all willing states to deploy their guards to Texas to prevent the entry of illegals and to remove them back across the border."
Trump further stated, "When I am President, on Day One, instead of fighting Texas, I will work hand in hand with Governor Abbott and other Border States to Stop the Invasion, Seal the Border, and Rapidly Begin the Largest Domestic Deportation Operation in History."
"Those Biden has let in should not get comfortable because they will be going home," Trump added.
Abbott has also garnered the support of over two dozen Republican states that have publicly backed him. Meanwhile, some Democrats have called on the Biden administration to take control of the National Guard.
