A lawmaker from the Chicago area is challenging residents who voted Democrat to live by their purported values.
Josh McBroom, a city council member in the wealthy Illinois suburb of Naperville, gained attention for his proposal to create a "sign-up" list for those willing to house migrant families. McBroom made these remarks during a council meeting on January 16, where the discussion centered around what the city should do if a wave of illegal immigrants were to arrive in their neighborhood.
During the meeting, McBroom expressed his reluctance to use taxpayer money to house or aid migrants, but acknowledged that there are people in the community who care and would be willing to help. He suggested creating a sign-up sheet to identify individuals who would be willing to house migrant families. McBroom emphasized the need to raise awareness and find out who in the community would be willing to provide assistance.
Video of McBroom's comments went viral on social media, prompting him to explain his stance in an interview with Fox News Digital. He stated that he felt compelled to address the issue that he believed was being avoided by his city council colleagues. McBroom highlighted the proximity of Chicago, which is facing a major crisis, and the fact that the mayor of Chicago is asking the suburbs for help. He emphasized that Naperville would not be using taxpayer dollars to address the issue.
McBroom's proposal was aimed at residents who voted for the "open border policy" during the Biden years. He challenged those who support this policy and live in comfortable homes in Naperville to open their homes to migrant families. McBroom pointed out that some residents already display signs in their yards supporting this policy, referring to popular political yard signs that advocate for progressive values such as "no human being is illegal."
While there was some support for McBroom's proposal among the council, he predicted that it would likely go nowhere due to the national coverage Naperville has received in recent days. Naperville, an affluent suburb located west of Chicago, has a median household income of $144,000, double the average Chicago household. Although DuPage County, where Naperville is located, was historically Republican, it has voted Democratic in recent election cycles.
McBroom acknowledged that his proposal might be seen as provocative but insisted that he was genuine in his intentions. He pointed out that over half of the town voted for the open border policy and questioned whether they would be willing to help out. McBroom clarified that his sign-up sheet was specifically for people who supported the open border policy, but he felt that many conservatives misunderstood his comments due to misleading headlines.
McBroom criticized Chicago's status as a sanctuary city, calling it an advertisement for illegal migrants. He also criticized Democratic Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker's plan to offer grants to municipalities that provide shelter to migrants. McBroom vowed to reject such grants, but he emphasized that the crisis ultimately needs to be addressed at the federal level.
He expressed his belief that the open border policy is not humane and highlighted the plight of children at bus stations without coats. McBroom stated that he did not vote for or support this policy and warned that it would end in disaster. He pointed out that Naperville has already experienced the ripple effects of Chicago's rise in crime reaching the suburbs and expressed concern about the impact of the migrant crisis on his city.
Currently, Naperville's policy is to provide "safe passage" for arriving migrants to Chicago, where they can receive aid. However, McBroom expressed concern about how long his city can continue sending migrants to Chicago, as the city is already overwhelmed. He emphasized that Naperville does not have the public resources to house and support large numbers of migrant families and that it is not within his purview as a city council member to use taxpayer money for non-residents or non-U.S. citizens.
McBroom criticized Democrats for not addressing the actual problem and stated that it is not the responsibility of Naperville to fix the problem caused by their policies. He emphasized the need for a federal solution to the crisis.
