A Mexican national enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program has been arrested by Border Patrol agents on charges of human smuggling, as reported in a social media post on Wednesday.
The identity of the DACA recipient has not been disclosed in the post made by the chief agent of the Border Patrol's El Centro Sector. Following the arrest, the individual was deported. According to the American Immigration Council, approximately 830,000 people are currently enrolled in DACA.
In a post on social media, USBP Chief Patrol Agent Gregory K. Bovino stated, "A MEX national w/ DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) privileges was arrested for human smuggling. DACA privileges are contingent upon maintaining lawful conduct. This former DACA recipient no longer has those privileges & was deported back to Mexico. #TruchaCoyote."
The El Centro Sector, which is responsible for patrolling 70 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border in the Imperial Valley of southern California, is where the arrest took place, according to information provided on the Customs and Border Protection website.
The DACA program was announced by former President Barack Obama in a speech at the White House in June 2012. However, in September, a federal judge deemed the program illegal, although it was not ordered to be halted.
Data released by United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reveals that nearly 380,000 illegal immigrants have been encountered at the U.S.-Mexico border during the first two months of fiscal year 2024, which began on October 1.
This follows 2,045,838 encounters in fiscal year 2023, 2,206,436 in fiscal year 2022, and 1,659,206 in fiscal year 2021. Additionally, 302,000 illegal immigrants entered the United States in December.
